What Causes The Steam Workshop Not Downloading Subscribed Mods

There can be many reasons behind the Steam workshop not downloading subscribed mods errors. Each cause requires a different method to fix the problem. But, we’ve tried to curate a list of the reasons for you to go over. This could help you narrow down the problem:

Corrupted Files In Workshop Folder

The most common reason is the corrupted files in the Workshop folder. This error can take place randomly. If Steam is refusing to download new mods or updates, this might be the culprit. You would have to find and delete the corrupted mods from the folder. That’s the only way to fix this error.

Check Download Cache Of Steam

Apart from the Workshop Folder, the Download cache might be another common cause. If you have too many downloads in a queue, you have a higher chance of facing this error.

Thus, you will have to clear out your queue. Otherwise, you will face an error where the Steam clients won’t download anything. Clearing the download cache often works.

Download Region Change

Are you using a VPN? Often, using a VPN can lead to a change in the download region of the Steam Client. But, a VPN isn’t the only responsible factor. The Steam Client settings could change on their own.

You might have a download region set too far away from where the mod is available. Similarly, your region may be set far away from where your connection is. So, it is worth checking this issue out.

The Big Picture Mode Error

The recent updates to the Steam client have changed the way the mods work. You won’t see them by default. There won’t be any status update, either. Instead, the mods will update or download in the background without any notification.

So, you will have to track their progress actively. For this, you will have to activate the Big Picture Mode. Then you’ll be able to see the mods.

Steam Beta – Good Old Source Of Problems

There is a Steam Beta program that helps improve Steam. But, it has been the root cause of many problems. If you have enrolled in the beta program, you have a higher chance of facing this error.

If you opt out of the beta program, you can solve a lot of issues on download. It applies to almost any download or update-related problem.

Corrupted Steam Files

In general, the error could appear due to corruption in Steam Files. If you’ve tried everything else, you might have to re-download and reinstall Steam.

Make sure to update to the latest version. Often, having a corrupted Steam installation or Client could be the root cause of errors.

How Do I Enable Mods On Steam Workshop?

The Steam Workshop will show you all the mods available for the game. These are the mods created by the community. In addition, you can visit the official Steam Mod website to find your mod.

Make sure that you have your account logged in. Then, find the mod you want and subscribe to it. There is a green button for it.

  • Now, go to your Steam Clent and find the game. Click on Play, and the Game Launcher will download the mod for you.
  • The launcher automatically checks the mods you’ve subscribed to. It will download and update them. If it isn’t available, the Steam Client will download the mod. You can check it in the Downloads tab.

To see if you have the mod, relaunch the game. Then, the game launcher will open up. Then, you can go to the Mods list and see if the mod is there.

You might have to restart the Steam once to see the mods window’s mods. Now, to activate the mod:

  • Click on the Checkbox next to the mod. This will make the Game Launcher load the mod.
  • Click Apply and then launch the game.

You can also uncheck other mods to deactivate them. If you’re using more than a single mod, make sure that they are compatible. Incompatible mods won’t work together. Only the one with the highest value will be active in the game.

All you need to do is check the corrupted mods and delete them. Remember that this only happens if you have a game that isn’t downloading or updating mods in Steam.

To fix this issue, you will have to access the Workshop Folder. There, you will find all the mods. Then, you will have to track down the broken ones and delete them. After that, scan for Game file integrity, and you are good to go.

Here are the steps:

  • First, you have to close your Steam Client thoroughly. Otherwise, you won’t be able to access the folders.
  • Go to the File Explorer and find the View tab option. Next, click on the ‘View Hidden Files & Folder’ option.
  • Now, you will have to go to the following directory: C > Program Files (x86) > Steam > SteamApps > Common > NAME_OF_THE_GAME > !Workshop.
  • Remember that name of the game is the folder with the game’s name on it.
  • Now, all you need to do is double click on each mod. Then, see if any mod comes up with the ‘Location Is Not Available’ error.
  • If you get this error for one or more mods, the problem is with corrupted mod files.
  • Delete every mod that shows you the ‘Location Is Not Available’ error.

After completing the steps, you will have to verify the integrity of the games.

  • Launch the Steam Client.
  • Go to the Library Tab.
  • Right-click on the game that you deleted the mods of.
  • Go to properties and find the Local Files Tab.
  • There, you will find the ‘Verify Integrity Of Game Files’ option.
  • Click on it and let the process go through.

Now go ahead and check if this solution fixes your issue.

Fix 2. Clear The Steam Download Cache

As mentioned earlier, your download cache could also be the root cause of the problem. This happens when there are too many downloads pending in the list. As a result, your Steam Downloader can glitch. This will lead to Steam not downloading any content, not just mods.

One of the best practices that you can have is clearing the Steam download cache. Make sure to check and clear the Steam download cache from time to time. This will keep your Client and downloads working optimally.

Here is how you do it:

  • Open the Steam Client and go to the options in the top-left corner. Select Steam from the options.
  • A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Settings. Then find the Downloads tab in the settings.
  • On the main panel (Right panel), you can find the Clear Download Cache option. It is generally at the bottom of the Download Tab settings.
  • Click on it and then click Yes to confirm. This will clear the local cache.

Now, close the Steam Client and relaunch it. See if you can download the mods and games now. If not, then you can also manually delete or remove items from the download queue.

For this, you will have to go to the Library tab from the Client’s home screen. Select Downloads.

See what is in the up-next list. Delete them or remove them from the list. Now, check to see if you can download mods again.

6 Fixes For Steam Workshop Not Downloading Mods (6)

Maybe the problem isn’t with downloading or loading the mods. Instead, it could just be a visibility issue. In other words, you might not receive a display for the mods.

The latest Steam interface makes it so you can subscribe and download the mods. But the progress and status might not be available for you to check.

The best fix for this issue is to enter the Big Picture Mode. Many users have reported that they can see the download progress in this mode. Use the following troubleshooting steps to enter the big picture mode:

  • In the top-left menu options, go to the View section.
  • A drop-down menu will open up. Select the Big Picture Mode from the options.

Now, go to the download queue and see if there is any progress. It should solve most of your issues. If not, then you can move to the other solutions.

Fix 5. Try Changing The Download Region

6 Fixes For Steam Workshop Not Downloading Mods (7)

If your download region is too far, Steam can block the downloads. There can be many reasons for this. If you actively use a VPN, it could cause this error, but not necessarily. Maybe you don’t use VPN, or perhaps the problem isn’t the VPN.

The settings of your Steam Clients might have changed on their own. This all depends on the IP of your connection. It is worth checking if you can fix the Steam not downloading mods issue by changing the region.

  • Click OK to save changes. Restart the Steam and try downloading again.

See if this solves the issue. If not, then move on to the final step.

Fix 6. Reinstall The Steam Client

6 Fixes For Steam Workshop Not Downloading Mods (8)

This is the last resort. If you’ve tried everything else, then this is where it all should fix up. Reinstalling Steam is an excellent way to fix almost every issue. But, the drawback is that you will end up losing all the games you’ve downloaded.

  • Click Uninstall and move ahead.
  • Restart your PC once the uninstallation finishes
  • Then, go to the C directory, program files (x86), and find any folder related to Steam. Delete them manually

After that, visit the official Steam website and make sure to download the latest version. Then, click on Install Steam and follow the on-screen command. Remember that you don’t have to rebuy the games. If you have your account credentials, you can use them conveniently. Now, go to the Workshop and see if you can download the mods.

Please Note:There is a way for you to save your downloaded files and games. You can go to the directory of Steam in the File Explorer. Do it before uninstalling the Steam.

  • Find the SteamApps or SteamAppData folders.
  • Copy them and save them separately.
  • Then, reinstall the Steam

.But remember, this So, it still runs the risk of the download error. So, if this doesn’t work, do the conventional reinstallation. Don’t save your data.
